History
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel originates from England and was bred originally for flushing small birds and as a lapdog during the Tudor period. It’s origins can be dated back to the 1600’s. King Charles II was so closely associated with his favourite dogs that they became known as King Charles spaniels. It is believed that the sign “Beware of the Dog” originated in his court meaning, not that they were dangerous, but don’t tread on them! King Charles II was renowned for his love of plays and revels which explains the nickname of ‘The Merry Monarch’s Dog’. This dog is classified as one of the Toy Dog Group. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was first Registered by the AKC (American Kennel Club) in 1996.The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, were initially developed to ease the lifestyle and provide pleasure to rich people. These dogs were initially owned by the wealthy and were viewed by others as status symbols - a luxury item with little apparent purpose.
